2011
Photo Contest Winners Announced The Picture This Photo Contest (in its eighth year) offers residents a chance to see their work published in The Mississauga News Community Guide. The guide comes out in October and features a selection of the year's best entries. Every season is ideal for outdoor photography, according to Chris Marn. The nature lover from Erin Mills placed first in this year's contest for amateur shutterbugs. His photo of a curious deer crossing the path of a jogger received top honours. Marn used a Canon Rebel SLR camera with a telephoto lens to capture the winning shot. For his efforts, Marn wins a $250 gift card to Henry's Photography Store. He plans on using his winnings to buy a Canon speedlite flash. A manager of medical documents, Marn, 36, says photography is his favourite hobby. His passion for landscape photography, nature and wildlife is evident on his Flickr website. Marn also enjoys photographing community events and activities at his church. "I was in the right place at the right time," he said. "I was on a nature walk along the Sawmill Valley Creek Trail when I noticed a deer crossing ahead. She didn't see me so I was able to get close and photograph the stare-down between the doe and an oncoming runner who slowed down to observe the animal." Marn, who has entered the Picture This Photo Contest each of the past three years, added: "I'm thrilled and honoured to win first place! I have always been impressed by the top entries in this competition." Second-place finisher Peter Dulis wins a dinner-and-show package from Stage West for his vivid photo of a fly drinking from a water droplet in his backyard. Honourable mention goes to Bastian Sander for "City Centre Sunrise," Girish Bala for "Winter Waterfront" and Jon Clarke for "Canoeing Champions." This year's photo entries impressed the contest's six judges, who included photographers Fred Loek, Rob Beintema and Chris Horobin from The Mississauga News and the editors of Goodlife Mississauga Magazine. "The two winning photos are fantastic," said Loek. "Chris Marn captured an extraordinary moment of man engaging wildlife. Peter Dulis' photo of a fly drinking from a water droplet is an excellent composition with vibrant colour." "We had another great response this year with approximately 2,000 submissions. Every year, the quality and diversity of photos keeps getting better," said contest organizer Jason Okolisan. The Mississauga News would like to thank everyone who submitted photos for this year's contest. |
